Recommended Reading for the Study of Ancient Religions

Egyptian

The Search for God in Ancient Egypt, by Jan Assmann, translated by David Lorton.  Cornell University Press, 2001.
This was the required textbook for my class which covered Egyptian Religion.  Translations from German always strike me as a little difficult, but this book is worth it.  The book goes beyond the mythology of the various gods and goddesses, and discusses the theology and piety of the ancient Egyptians, and the experience of the Divine Presence.  Click here to buy from Amazon.  (They allow you to look inside this one).

Mesopotamian

The Treasures of Darkness:  A History of Mesopotamian Religion,
by Thorkild Jacobsen.  Yale University Press, 1976.
A classic on Mesopotamian religion, this book was the required text for my class which covered Mesopotamian Religions.  He consistently provides textual evidence and gives one a good feel for the religious mind of the ancient Mesopotamian.  Click here to buy from Amazon.  (They allow you to look inside this one).
